Judy's Story

(Part two)
Diet

I initially decided not to include any diets here, thinking that most of these therapies include their own dietary advice.

However March 2002, I could no longer cope with the ravenous hunger and having to eat all the time. I was unable to participate in things outside our home. As I deteriorated so my HD symptoms became intrusive and I had to plan my life very carefully and avoid late nights.

I lack energy and coping with late nights is impossible. I had to plan to do things on alternate days. Lack of concentration and only able to do one task at a time. Dave learnt not to try to discuss a different topic or task than I was concentrating on.

My brain slows down and I find it hard to make a fluent conversation, I have no sense of time or the date, appointments are a challenge. I can not navigate and I remember no dreams.

A light headache just above my right eye.

My tongue muscle tightened and pointed and swept around my mouth causing saliva that I had to swallow continually. It affected my speech. I had to be careful swallowing and could choke.

My weak co-ordination affected my handwriting, balance, cleaning my teeth, sitting in an audience and keeping my hands and feet under control, slightly.

Because my natural sleep hormones have never flowed until morning I have always had to have sleeping pills, especially since HD has been around. However even 2 Imovane [ a hypnotic drug] and I was still waking 2am and through all this I never ever could go back to sleep

To help me out, my homeopath suggested I try the ProZone lifestyle, diet EPA supplement, much water and 30 minutes fast walk devised by Dr Peter Sears. For 20 years he has worked to understand the biochemical basis of disease and develop functional foods to reduce the risk of disease.

By eating balanced meals and snacks the body is enabled to work properly, hence all the improvements.

He discovered that too much of the wrong fats and not enough Omega 3 fats, found in fish oil could disturb the balance of the hormones. Hence the result of disturbed eicosanoid balance are arthritis, asthma, allergies, depression, high blood pressure and cholesterol and other factor related to heart disease, depressed immune system, poor sleep patterns, sleep apnea, dry wrinkled skin, brittle nails and hair etc. Hence the improvement in old problems

Dr Sears own website is useful and informative and the only contact for those of you not in NZ.

The New Zealand Zone Certified Instructors, Carol and Kevin Bateman have a website that outlines what they have to offer.

By eating in the Zone, they promise you will experience

Increased energy
I can participate fully again day and night.

No hunger between meals and snacks.
I have to have my meals and snacks on time and often extras in the late afternoon and evening, but that is fine.

Sharp mental focus throughout the day.
I can tackle any situation and or learning

Feel and look better
I am functioning better than I remember ever.

Sleep better
Incredibly so. I am still using my Imovane but I am getting really sound 6 hours sleep. I am hoping to get off the Imovane. Because you sleep deeper only 6 hours is needed.

Improved workouts and athletic performance.
I am regaining my stamina and strength. We are planning to do many of those beautiful walks in NZ’ that are still waiting for us.

Efficient steady weight loss.
If you need to.

Dramatic improvement in many disease states.
My tendonitis in my hands has almost gone and the hard balls in my feet are softening. My fingernails are hardening.

Within the first month, much to my surprise I have experienced all of these outcomes. And looking and feeling better and still getting better day by day. 10th June 2000, My HD symptoms are reduced to just my tongue and the surface of my mouth. No body else can notice.

My chiropractor noticed that the bumps on the back of my head had gone. He receives e-mail printouts of Dr Sears's research, hence his interest in my use of EPA.

At the moment I am the only Huntington’s person in the world that is using ProZone. If and when symptoms come I will certainly continue with ProZone, knowing that that is the best nutrition for me that I can have.

In order to put on weight I stopped following the ProZone diet. It was some relief because I was finding it to be very anti social at home, for café visits, restaurants, enjoying other people’s company and the whole food culture that surrounds us.

At this time a book flyer arrived for ‘ Stay healthy by supplying what’s lacking in your diet’ Researched by David Coory of Tauranga NZ. My husband Dave was very interested and purchased one. ‘The book is dedicated to researchers world-wide, who painstakingly pursue a better understanding of that most complex and marvellous process- the human digestive system’

It works to enable you to avoid and cure health problems by knowing what you need to eat in order to get the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of all vitamins and minerals in NZ foods. These are based on The Concise NZ Food Composition Tables 5th Edition, researched by Food & Crop, Lincoln.

The information in the book can help us all, with guidance from a sympathetic doctor or natural health practitioner, plus a little self-discipline, to greatly improve and maintain our health’

Because we believe the information to be so important, we have bought books for all our family.

$23 for first copy and $17 for subsequent copies.
